IV dental sedation or monitored anesthesia is a modern technique used by dental care providers to make patients feel relaxed in the dental chair.
Read on to learn more about IV dental sedation.
IV dental sedation is a moderate form of sedation administered intravenously. It is used by dentists to help patients relax and feel calm during dental procedures.
With IV sedation, the patient is in a form of “twilight sleep” and minimally aware of their surroundings or the ongoing dental procedure.
This type of sedation has numerous benefits including:
Quick action resulting in minimal awareness and no pain during the procedure
Easy monitoring of vital signs for dose optimization
The patient does not remember the procedure and, therefore, the risk of post-procedure distress is minimized
Allows dentists to perform multiple procedures in one dental visit, if required
Here is how you can prepare for IV dental sedation and what to expect:
Your dentist will ask to see your medical records (previous medications, dental history, allergies, etc.). Also, you will be advised to refrain from eating at least 6-8 hours before sedation is administered.
Wear comfortable clothes if the procedure is a long one. Do not drive to the dentist, take a cab instead or ask someone to drive you there and back.
Your dentist will start an IV drip in your hand or arm. Any medications such as analgesics, anti-inflammatories, and/or steroids, will be given through your IV as well. Your vitals such as pulse, breathing, and blood pressure will be monitored throughout the procedure.
IV dental sedation is quick-acting and will immediately make you feel relaxed and unaware of any visual, olfactory, and hearing clues.
You might feel slightly drowsy. Have a friend or family member collect post-procedure instructions and take you home. Take adequate rest for a day and avoid strenuous activities, unsanctioned medications, or anything that adds sedative effects such as alcohol or tranquilizers.
